In October, the growth of retail turnover was also more dynamic, affected by e-shops and hyper- and supermarkets
Retailers also recorded a faster year-on-year turnover growth in October, for the third consecutive month. E-shops were the most prosperous, hyper- and supermarkets recorded the second highest turnover growth this year. Higher turnover was also maintained by specialized stores of shoes, apparel or drugstores.
Retail turnover1) also rose in October 2024, year-on-year by 4.9%. The pace of turnover growth accelerated for the third consecutive month. The sector maintained a year-on-year higher turnover since the beginning of this year.
Up to 6 out of 9 components of retail trade had higher turnover at constant prices compared to last year. The result of the entire sector was most significantly affected by mail-order sales2) (sales outside stores, stalls and markets) with a year-on-year increase in turnover by a third. The most important hyper- and supermarkets (non-specialized stores) were also prosperous, their turnover increased by 5.7%, which was the second highest value of this component since May 2022. Turnover growth was also recorded by specialized stores, e.g. footwear, apparel, drugstores or pharmacies (specialized sales of other goods), by 6.6%. From the proportionally smaller components, turnover increased by double digits for specialized sales of food, beverages and tobacco and, at a slower pace, for hobby markets, furniture and electronics stores (specialized sales of other goods for households).
On the contrary, compared to last year, sale of fuels continued to record a decrease2). Turnover also dropped by 7.7% in specialized stores for culture and recreation goods (bookstores, sporting goods, toys) and by 5.3% in specialized stores with information and communication devices.

Year-on-year development of other components of trade in October 2024
Of the other components of internal trade, year-on-year turnover growth1) was recorded by sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 10.3% and accommodation by 13.1%. Turnover decreased in wholesale3) by 3.3% and in food and beverage service activities by 7.4%.

Month-on-month development in October 2024 compared with September 2024
Seasonally adjusted turnover in October rose month-on-month in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 5.6%, in retail trade by 0.7%, in accommodation by 5.9% and in food and beverage service activities by 1.1%. It dropped only in wholesale3) by 3.6%.

In total for the first 10 months of 2024, turnover1) rose year-on-year in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 0.4%, in retail trade by 3.8% and in accommodation by 3.2%. A turnover drop was recorded by wholesale2) by 2.4% and by food and beverage service activities by 1.1%.
