2,59 million Slovaks were employed in the domestic economy and abroad, the employment rate reached 73,6 %

According to the Labour Force Sample Survey, the slowdown of the employment growth which persisted throughout the year 2019, was the most significant in the 4th quarter of 2019. Compared with the 4th quarter of 2018, the growth rate slowed down by 1,8 p.p. to 0,1 %. The number of the employed 2) increased by 1,9 thous. to 2 591,2 thous. persons, in absolute terms. The employment rate of people aged 20-64 3), increased by 0,5 p.p. to 73,6 %. In men, it grew by 0,3 p.p. to 80,1 % and in women by 0,7 p.p. to 67 %. After excluding the number of employed abroad, the employment in Slovakia increased by 0,4 % to 2 462,1 thous. persons.

Compared with the 3rd quarter of 2019, the seasonally adjusted total employment increased by 5,6 % (by 0,2 %) to 2 586,6 thous. persons.

The employment development was influenced by a growth in the number of employees in several sectors. In industry, their number was higher by 15,5 thous., of which in manufacturing by 16,9 thous. persons. The increase of the employment in agriculture continued throughout 2019, in the 4th quarter, the number of employees in this sector grew by 16,3 thous. (by 27,4 %). In services sector, employment increased mainly in information and communication by 13,3 thous and in professional, scientific and technical activities by 8,5 thous. persons. Employment decreased in construction for the second consecutive quarter, by 15,8 thous. persons to 227,2 thous. persons.

The total employment increased due to a higher number of employees by 2,1 thous. (by 0,1 %) to 2204,5 thous. persons. The number of entrepreneurs 4) dropped by 1,2 thous (by 0,3 %) to 384,7 thous. affected by the lower number of entrepreneurs without employees by 0,8 thous. to 309,6 thous. persons and the number of entrepreneurs with employees by 0,3 thous. to 75,1 thous. persons.

The age structure of the labour market was affected mainly by the increases of employees aged 60 and older by 24,1 thous. persons, in particular the number of women increased by 14,8 thous. which was the highest year-on-year growth between the sexes. The number of persons aged 35-49 grew significantly by 11,1 thous. persons. The employment rate of young people aged 15-24 decreased considerably, by 21,2 thous. persons.

Employment increased the most in Banskobystrický kraj (by 2,4 %) and Trnavský kraj (by 1,6 %), it decreased in three regions. Similarly, the growth of employment rate was the fastest, year-on-year, in Banskobystrický kraj (by 1,7 p.p.) and Trnavský kraj (by 1,6 p.p.). The highest regional employment rate was in Bratislavský kraj (by 81,3 %), on the contrary, it was the lowest in the regions of eastern Slovakia, in Prešovský kraj by 69,6 % and in Košický kraj by 68,7 %.

On average, throughout 2019, the total employment increased, year-on-year, by 0,7 % to 2 583,7 thous. persons.

People working abroad

According to the LFSS 5) the number of the employed working abroad continued to decrease, the pace of decline slowed down by 1,9 p.p. to 6,2 %. Compared with 4th quarter of 2018, their number decreased by 8,6 thous. to 129,1 thous.persons.

They worked mostly in industry (34 thous. persons), in construction (29,3 thous. persons) and in health and social work activities (27,6 thous. persons). Regarding the European countries, they worked mostly in Austria (44,6 thous. persons), in the Czech Republic (27,7 thous. persons) and in Germany (21,8 thous. persons).

From the regional perspective, mostly employees from Prešovský kraj (28,4 thous.) and Nitriansky kraj (22,9 thous.) were working abroad. Their number decreased the most in Žilinský kraj (by 7,5 thous.persons), on the contrary, it increased the most in Bratislavský kraj (by 1,4 thous.persons).

The decrease in the number of job vacancies 6) which started after a long-term favourable development in the 1st quarter of 2019 continued until the end of 2019. In the 4th quarter, their number reached 19 962 which was the lowest value during the last three years (since the 1st quarter of 2017). Compared with the 4th quarter of 2018, the number of job vacancies decreased by 7197 posts (by 26,5 %). Their number dropped, absolutely the most, in wholesale and retail trade (by 1859 posts), construction (by 1514 posts) and in manufacturing (by 1290 posts). Job vacancies increased mainly in health and social work activities (by 273 posts).

2) according to the LFSS, the employed are all persons over 15 age, who perform work for 1 hour at least in surveyed (reference) week and who get wage, salary or other remuneration or bonus in order to gain profit, including persons performing a contractual work, seasonal workers, persons on maternity leave, persons employed abroad less than 1 year, persons commuting to work abroad and persons paid for activation works; respondents are included into sectors by economic activity of local unit, not the whole company
3) share of the employed in the age category 20–64 expressed in percentages from the population of the same age
4)  shareholders, self-employees, self-employed farmers, persons engaged in the liberal profession with one or major occupation
5) migration for work abroad lasting less than one year including unspecified time for journey to work
6)  number of job vacancies - number of newly created, no occupied or vacant jobs by quarterly statistical statement including estimate for tradesmen
