The number of visitors to Slovakia's hotels and guesthouses in January 2024 remained below 400 000 guests for the third consecutive month
Visit rate increased slightly year-on-year. However, it was far from reaching the values from the record pre-Covid January 2020, the number of guests was still lower by a fifth. Accommodation providers in Žilinský kraj approached the most the figures of January 2020, but the majority of regions registered a double-digit decrease.
374 000 guests visited tourism accommodation establishments in Slovakia in January of this year, which was by 8% more than in the corresponding period last year. The achieved visit rate almost equaled the values of the touristically successful year 2019, but the accommodation providers still lacked 17% of visitors to the values of the record January 2020.
Guests spent almost 11% more nights in hotels and guesthouses than a year ago, their number exceeded 958 thousand, the average length of stay in January was 2.6 nights.

In the structure of the accommodated guests the domestic visitors represented two-thirds, their number increased slightly year-on-year to 238 000 guests. Compared to the record-breaking January 2020 (the last January unaffected by the pandemic), accommodation providers lacked 16% of domestic tourists (44 000). The number of foreign visitors increased year-on-year by almost a tenth (to 136 000 foreigners), their number was less by 18% than in 2020.

The most guests visited the regions focused on winter tourism in the mountains, Žilinský and Prešovský kraj, which together made up more than half of the total number of visitors. Both of these regions had over 60 000 domestic guests and it differed only in the number of foreigners, who were significantly fewer in Prešovský kraj. In third place was Bratislavský kraj, which was visited by 19% of Slovak tourists, and as in the only region, the majority of guests here were foreign guests.
In a year-on-year comparison, the visit rate increased in all regions of Slovakia except Košický kraj. However, none of the regions reached the records of the number of visitors from January 2020. The closest to them was Žilinský kraj, which lacked only 7% of guests, but the other regions lagged behind by double digits. Trenčiansky, Nitriansky and Bratislavský kraj had the most significant drop by more than a quarter.
