Turnover followed a downward trend in industry, and a decline in construction was also recorded

In September, a year-on-year decrease in turnover deepened the lagging of industry by 9 % and construction by 20 % behind the pre-pandemic levels. Turnover of selected market services have not yet reached the level of September 2019. The other two monitored sectors already surpassed the level of two years ago in turnover, most considerably in information and communication.

Turnover of industry and construction were lower, year-on-year, in September. During September, a year-on-year decline was deepened by almost 3 percentage points to 9.3 % in industries. A fall was reflected the second month in a row after the previous six months of growth. Compared to the values of turnover before the pandemic (with September 2019), the industry lagged behind by 9.4 %. After growing in August, construction again reported a year-on-year decrease in turnover by 2.1 % and the value of turnover lagged behind September 2019 by almost 20 %.

In three other sectors of the economy, turnover rose year-on-year. It increased in transportation and storage by 6.4 %, information and communication by 8.2 % and in selected market services by 0.6 %. The first two above-mentioned sectors exceeded the values of turnover before the pandemic (September 2019, only selected market services are still slightly lagging behind (by 2.3 %).

The SO SR also presents a comparison with the same pre-pandemic period in order to enable an analysis of the development of individual sectors of the economy, to what extent they manage to overcome the decreases caused by the pandemic in 2020.

Development in September compared to August 2021 1)

In September 2021, turnover increased, month-on-month, in transportation and storage by 2.2 %, and in industry by 1.8 %. Turnover of selected market services remained at the level of August 2021. However, turnover recorded a month-on-month decrease in construction by 4.5 % and in information and communication by 1.4 %.

More detailed information on the development of turnover in September 2021 compared to September 2020

Turnover of industry decreased the second month in a row and in September it dropped by 9.3 % year-on-year. Compared to the pre-pandemic period (September 2019), the total turnover of industry lagged behind by 9.4 %, similarly compared to the previous month. In total, the level of turnover two years ago (September 2019)  was exceeded by seven of the total of 16 monitored industries 2), a decisive manufacture of transport equipment continued to lag the most significantly by 28.3 %.

A year-on-year decrease was affected by the fact that eight of the 16 monitored industries recorded a decline in turnover, mostly manufacture of transport equipment by 31.5 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 10.4 %, other manufacture, repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 10.1 %. On the contrary, turnover of electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply increased by 22.4 %, as well as manufacture of coke and petroleum products recorded a rise by 16 %, manufacture of chemicals by 13 % and also manufacture of machinery and equipment by 12.8 %.

After rising last month, turnover of construction again fell, year-on-year, by 2.1 %. It lagged behind the turnover two years ago (September 2019) by almost 20 %.

In September, turnover of transportation and storage 3) increased by 6.4 % year-on-year and were by 5 % higher than in September 2019. This sector recorded higher level of turnover compared to the pre-pandemic period the fourth month in a row. A year-on-year growth was mainly affected by warehousing and support service for transportation, where turnover increased by almost 20 %. As for the five activities of the sector, the level of turnover two years ago was already reached by three decisive components - land transport and transport via pipeline, as well as warehousing and support service for transportation. A growth of shipping also contributed significantly.

In information and communication 4), turnover increased by 8.2 % year-on-year. Compared to two years ago, there was a rise of almost 8 %. A year-on-year growth was achieved by all six components of the sector, the most significant growth was recorded in motion picture, video and television program production by 24 %. However, it is a minor component. At the same time, the level of turnover two years ago was not exceeded by two components of the sector, namely turnover of radio and television broadcasting and also telecommunications.

In September, turnover of selected market services 5) increased, year-on-year, at the level 0.6 % the sixth month in a row, but lagged by 2.3 % behind the pre-pandemic period (compared with September 2019). In the current month, the total turnover increased, year-on-year, similarly compared to the previous month, mainly due to a growth in the second most important component in administrative, and support service activities by 28.1 %. Turnover fell in architectural and engineering activities by 22.3 % as well as in gambling and betting activities by 13.6 %.

Within the more detailed structures of the sector, a significant year-on-year increase in turnover was maintained by travel agencies and tour operators by almost 64 %, but they reached the level of only 35 % in September of pre-pandemic period. The most important component.

Development in the nine months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020

In total, in the first nine months of 2021, turnover of industry increased by 10.5 % year-on-year. This year's year-on-year result for nine months was mostly affected by higher turnover in - manufacture of transport equipment by 11.2 % as well as in manufacture of metals by 16.9 % and in manufacture of machinery and equipment by 21.4 %. Year-on-year increases were also high in other sectors, but they should be taken into account in the context of a lower comparable base and   downturns caused by the first wave of the pandemic in 2020. In total, turnover of transportation and storage increased by 12.3 % and in information and communication by 7.1 % year-on-year. In the other two industries, the total turnover fell in construction by 0.7 % and in selected market services by 0.8 % in the first nine months.
