In March, industrial production (IP) decreased by 19,6 % year-on-year, reaching the lowest level since May 2009. The development according to the sections of SK NACE Rev. 2 was affected by a drop in manufacturing by 21,4 % and in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 10,4 % and by an increase in mining and quarrying by 7,2 %.

In terms of the specific groupings of the industrial sectors, which contributed most to the total production decrease, the most significant drop was recorded in manufacture of transport equipment by 38,3 %, manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 18,2 %, manufacture of rubber and plastic and other non-metallic mineral products by 16,1 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 41,1 % and other manufacture, repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 30,7 %. The total production was affected by an increase in manufacture of electronic equipment by 5 %, mining and quarrying by 7,2 % and in manufacture of food, beverages and tobacco products by 0,7 %.

Compared with March 2019, in terms of the main industrial groupings, production of durable consumer goods decreased by 41,5 %, production of investment goods by 31,3 %, production relating to energy by 10 %, production of non-durable consumer goods by 9,7 % and production of intermediate goods by 7,7 %

After seasonal adjustment, industrial production decreased by 20,2 % in March 2020 compared with February 2020.

Since the beginning of the year, IP decreased, year-on-year, by 7,3 %, of which in manufacturing by 8,9 %. Production increased in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 0,3 % and in mining and quarrying by 13,8 %.

In terms of the specific groupings of the industrial sectors, which contributed most to the total production drop, the most significant decrease was recorded in manufacture transport equipment by 13,5 %, manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 11,6 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 28,7 %, other manufacture, repair and installation of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 18,4 % and in manufacture of basic metal and fabricated metal products by 6,1 %. Production increased in manufacture of electrical equipment by 14,5 %, mining and quarrying by 13,8 %, electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 0,3 % and in manufacture of food, beverages and tobacco products by 0,1 %.

In terms of the main industrial groupings, production of durable consumer goods dropped by 28,9 %, production of investment goods by 12 %, production of non-durable consumer goods by 8,3 % and production of intermediate goods by 1,1 % and production related to energy by 0,9 %.


Note: preliminary data; industrial production represents volume production changes in its natural expression. Data are adjusted from the influence of the number of working days by program JDEMETRA+ and during processing of every month they are back-casted from the beginning of the time series. In March 2020, the number of working days was higher by one day compared with the corresponding period in 2019 and it was coincident from the beginning of the year.
