The total population decrease deepened, the birth rate continued to decline
As of March 31, 2026 the Slovak Republic had 5,405,368 inhabitants, which was 10,422 persons less compared to the same period of the previous year (5,415,790 inhabitants). The share of women in the total population was 51.08%.
In the 1st quarter of 2026, there were 9,964 live births in the SR, which was 425 less than in the same period of the previous year, and 14,034 persons died, i. e. 463 less than in the 1st quarter of the previous year. The natural decrease of the population represented -4,070 persons, 38 persons less compared to the 1st quarter of 2025 (-4 108 persons).
The net foreign migration reached 31 persons (there were 1,208 immigrants and 1,177 emigrants) in the 1st quarter of 2026, it was 416 less than in the same period of the previous year.
The total decrease of the population of the Slovak Republic at the end of the 1st quarter was 4,039 persons, compared to the 1st quarter of 2025 it deepened by 378 persons (in the 1st quarter of 2025, the total population decrease was 3 661 persons).
