The autumn revision showed a more moderate performance of the Slovak economy in years 2023 and 2024

The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic revised GDP data for 2024 and the previous three years for the second time this year, as part of regularly scheduled revisions. Revisions are an important part of improving the quality of data on the state of the economy to provide more accurate inputs for the creation of policies and measures.

The Slovak economy grew slightly slower in 2024 than was published in the spring revision in spring 2025. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth in constant prices reached 1.9%, originally 2.1%. The revised total GDP volume in 2024 in constant prices reached 104.3 billion euros, which was 114 million euros less than the originally published value.

The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic has published new GDP values and their structures for the period 2021 to 2024 as part of this year's second planned autumn revision of national accounts in accordance with the Revision Calendar for 2025 and the National Revision Policy. GDP data are revised regularly twice a year (always in April and October), quarterly and annual data of the most important economic indicators are precised for the last four years.

The revision slightly reduced the value of economic growth in 2023 from the original 2.2% to the current 2.1%. It also affected 2022, where there was also a slight adjustment, but growth increased slightly from the original 0.4% to 0.5%. 2021 remained unchanged. The adjustments are related to the incorporation of outputs from the final annual surveys of indicators entering GDP for 2024, which refined the data obtained from quarterly surveys. The cumulative impact of the revision in the years 2021 to 2024 represented a change from -0.2 to 0.1 percentage points (p. p.).

Revision of quarterly data

The revision was also reflected in the GDP values for individual quarters. The original values of year-on-year growth or decline in real GDP (in constant prices) were adjusted from -0.2 p. p. to +0.3 p. p.

The adjustments in the individual quarters of the revised years were not significant. GDP values in the individual quarters of 2024, with the exception of the second quarter, decreased by 0.2 p. p., the second quarter remained unchanged. In the quarters of 2023, only the 1st quarter showed slightly better performance (the revised value from 0.8% to 0.9%), on the contrary, in two quarters growth was revised to lower values by 0.1 p.p. to 0.2 p. p. The values were revised most significantly in the 4th quarter of 2022, when the originally reported decrease of 0.1% was revised to growth of 0.2%. In addition, weaker economic performance was also shown in the first two quarters of 2025, where there was a decrease of 0.1 p. p. in both quarters.

Revisions, and especially the extensive benchmark revision, are a planned tool for improving the quality of statistical data. They adjust the numbers based on new data sources, additional input information and changes in methodological procedures. Revisions of national accounts thus respond to the changing user needs and legislative changes. The result is more accurate data on the state of the economy. The content, deadlines and implementation of revisions are coordinated in cooperation with Eurostat, the European Central Bank, national statistical offices and national central banks of the EU countries. Major revisions are carried out over long time series in order to ensure comparability.

As part of the autumn revision, the classification of household expenditure – COICOP 2018, which is published with household final consumption, was also updated. According to the new classification, household expenditure is classified according to 13 expenditure categories (in the previous classification, the breakdown was according to 12 categories). For some expenditure categories, changes were also made to their content definition. The change in classification affected the publication of the entire time series of data from the 1st quarter of 1995.
