Although a decline in turnover of retail trade slowed down in February 2021, it was still one of the largest in history.

During the second month of 2021, a significant year-on-year decrease in turnover of retail trade continued, it was affected by declines, especially in hypermarkets and specialized stores. Only internet sales and mail order services grew.

In February, compared to January values, a decrease in turnover of retail trade slowed down only slightly, turnover was lower by 14,7 % year-on-year and for the second month in a row, it recorded historical slump rates. Turnover was below the level of the previous year's February in a total of eight out of nine monitored retail activities. Retailers continued to be affected by anti-pandemic measures, most stores were closed and lower number of calendar days in February this year (in leap year of 2020, February had one extra day) could contribute to the total decrease. The largest drops in turnover by 86 % were recorded by accommodation providers and by 55 % in food and beverage service activities.

Development in February 2021 compared to January 2021 1)

In February 2021, compared to January 2021, turnover increased in all main activities of internal trade. The largest month-on-month increase was recorded by accommodation service providers, namely by 36,9 %. Turnover rose in wholesale by 6,2 %, in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 3,7 %, in retail trade by 1,6 %, also in food and beverage service activities, although only slightly, by 0,3 %.

Development in February 2021 compared to February 2020

In February, turnover of retail trade fell by 14,7 % year-on-year. In the nine monitored activities, the level of the previous year exceeded only turnover achieved in retail trade out of stores, stalls and markets by 10,5 %, which includes also mail order and internet sales.

The overall decline was mainly due to a turnover lag in the most important activities, namely in retail trade in non-specialized stores (hyper and supermarkets). After a growth of turnover almost throughout 2020, in the first months of 2021 turnover of traders began to record the largest year-on-year declines since 2009 (since the last change in methodology). Turnover of large markets decreased by 13,2 % year-on-year in February.

A turnover decrease in the second most important retail activities – in specialized stores with other goods – also deepened to 26,2 %, thus reaching the level of decline at the time of the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic (level of May 2020). The overall decrease was also significantly influenced by a turnover lag in specialized stores with other household goods by 23,9 % and in specialized stores with automotive fuel by 14,2 %.

Due to an increased interest in information related to the coronacrisis, the SO SR also provides extended information on selected more detailed retail trade activities 2). Within them, turnover decreased significantly year-on-year in stores with clothing by 80,1 % and in stores with footwear and leather goods by 78,6 %. A turnover drop was recorded also in retail stores of meat and meat products by 38,5 % and in stores with tobacco products by 20,8 %. In each of these activities, the growth rate deepened compared with January.

A turnover drop in sale and repair of motor vehicles continued also at the second month of 2021; although compared with January it mitigated to 11,2 %. The overall decline was the most influenced by the lower year-on-year turnover in sale of motor vehicles by 14,2 %.

After a drop in the previous month, wholesale turnover increased again, growing by 5,8 % year-on-year in February. The largest year-on-year increases were reached in  wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals by 49,8 % (among other things this includes also wholesale of grain, unmanufactured tobacco, seeds and animal feeds) and in wholesale of household goods by 12,5 %.

While a turnover slump from both in accommodation and food and beverage services slightly slowed down, compared with January, it still continued to reach historically highest values. In accommodation, turnover fell by 86,3 % year-on-year (87,9 % in January) and turnover in food and beverage services by 54,8 % (in January it dropped by 55 %).

Development in the first two months of 2021 compared with the corresponding period in 2020

In the first two months of 2021, compared with the corresponding period last year, turnover dropped in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 15,5 % and a decrease in wholesale was only moderate by 0,2 %, it was more significant in retail trade, i.e. by 15,8 %.

Turnover has considerably fallen in accommodation by 87,1 %, also turnover in food and beverage services by 54,9 %.
