Passenger transport continued to grow significantly, passengers used buses, trains and public transport more
Passenger numbers and transport distances in passenger transport continued to grow year-on-year at a double-digit rate. Freight transport showed a decrease in volumes of transported goods for seven consecutive months, especially in road transport.
The total value of the volume of freight transport in January 2023 reached 16.4 million tons of goods, which represented a year-on-year decrease by 7%. The year-on-year decrease in the volume of transported goods continued for the seventh consecutive month. The main component of the industry affected the overall decline - road transport, which represented two-thirds of the transported tons of goods, it transported by 5% less year-on-year. Rail transport did not change significantly year-on-year, it recorded a year-on-year decrease by 0.5%, which was, however, the mildest decrease in the last year.
In January 2023, freight transport performance, taking into account also the transport distance, reached 3.6 billion tonne- kilometers (tkm), increasing by 1.9% year-on-year. Despite the decrease in the volume of transported goods, road transport increased performance by 5%, and rail transport also recorded a slight increase in performance.
Passenger transport was significantly affected by road transport
The significant year-on-year increase in passenger transport continued at the beginning of the year, in January 2023. The number of transported persons increased by 27.3% year-on-year and reached 54.6 million. Growth was recorded by all components of passenger transport. The number of road and public transport passengers increased by more than a quarter. Passenger transport by rail also increased (by 36.9%), which, however, makes up only 10% of passengers in passenger transport.
Performance of passenger transport, which also takes into account the length of the roads, reached in January 2023, 698 million passenger kilometers, compared to last year, they were higher by almost 50%. The high year-on-year growth was affected by longer transport distances, especially in rail transport.
