The corona crisis increased the unemployment rate to 7,2 %, leaving almost 200 000 thousand people without work.

A growth rate of the unemployment accelerated in the third quarter. The number of unemployed persons according to LFSS 2) reached 196,5  thousand persons and was higher by 21,9 % year-on-year, which represents 35,3 thousand persons. The unemployment rate increased by 1,3 p.p. to 7,2 % year-on-year. It thus grew for the third consecutive quarter and reached the level of the turn of 2017 and 2018.

In a quarter-on-quarter comparison (3rd quarter of 2020 compared to the 2nd quarter of 2020), seasonally adjusted unemployment increased by 10,6 thousand persons, which represents an increase of 5,9 % to 190,7 thousand persons.

As a result of the corona crisis, the short-term unemployment rose in particular. The number of unemployed within six months reached 96,1 thousand, which means that every second person without work has become unemployed in the last six months. The share of this group in the total number of unemployed increased to 48,9 %, a year ago it was less than a third.

The unemployment increased the most in the two most numerous age groups of unemployed, namely in the group of 35-49 years old by 34,7% and among young people 25-34 years old by 29 %. The number of unemployed decreased slightly in 55-59 years old and in 50-54 years old, year-on-year. The unemployed, who have never had a job, represented 21,2 % of the total unemployment, their share decreased by 7,8 p.p. year-on-year. In terms of the economic activity of the last employer, the most people worked last in industry (25,9 %) and trade (8,5 %).

Higher percentage increases of unemployed were recorded mainly in Trenčiansky and Nitriansky kraj. At the same time, the highest increase in the regional unemployment rate was by 2,3 p.p. to the level of 5,1 % in Trenčiansky kraj, but this region belongs to the regions with a lower unemployment rate. There was also a very similar increase in the unemployment rate in Nitriansky and Prešovslý kraj (by 2,2 p.p.).

As for the eight regions of Slovakia, three recorded a higher unemployment rate than the Slovak average, the highest values were in Prešovský kraj 12,2 % and in Košický kraj 8,8 %. The lowest unemployment rate, i.e. 3,6 %, remained in Bratislavský kraj.

In the 1st to the 3rd quarter of 2020, the unemployment increased by 12,6 % year-on-year to 178,7 thousand persons. The unemployment rate increased by 0,8 p.p. to 6,6 %.

2) the unemployed according to the LFSS are all persons aged 15 to 74, who simultaneously meet three condi-tions: they do not have any paid work in the monitored week; have been actively looking for work in the last four weeks or have already found a job and will start working within 3 months; are able to start work within two weeks at the latest
