The number of domestic visitors in hotels and guesthouses exceeded the values of 2017 and 2018, foreign visitors are also returning
In April, Slovak accommodation establishments recorded that to reach high values of record year of 2019 only 10% of visitors was missing. Bratislavský kraj, Žilinský kraj and Prešovský kraj standardly attracted the most guests. A more dynamic return of foreign visitors continued, their number in April was the highest so far this year.
In April 2023, the total number of visitors to Slovak tourism accommodation establishments increased, year-on-year, by almost a third to 400,000 people. Visitors spent almost 1 million nights in tourism establishments, which was a quarter more than a year ago. The average length of stay was 2.4 nights. An increase in accommodation indicators was mainly influenced by the low comparative base from April 2022, when the activity of accommodation establishments was affected by the two-year COVID-19 pandemic. In April, only 10% (43,000) of visitors were missing compared to 2019.

Two thirds of the accommodated, i.e. 248,000 people, were domestic visitors. In April, the Žilinský kraj, Prešovský kraj and Bratislavský kraj recorded the highest number of domestic visitors. These three regions together accounted for two thirds of domestic visitors.
At the same time, 151,000 foreign visitors used accommodation services in Slovakia in April, it was a 56% year-on-year increase in the number of visitors. The number increased year-on-year in all regions. Bratislavský kraj recorded the highest increase, by two thirds. Foreign visitors recorded significant drops during the pandemic and we are slowly returning to normal. In the fourth month, the number of foreign visitors was comparable to 2019 only in Žilinský kraj and Prešovský kraj. The highest number of foreign visitors visited Bratislavský kraj (71,000), Žilinský kraj (23,000) and Prešovský kraj (15,000 foreign visitors). These three regions together accounted for more than three quarters of the total foreign visitors.

In total, for the first four months of 2023, 1.6 million visitors stayed in tourism establishments. This is a year-on-year 1.5-fold increase. Compared to 2019, only 8% of the total number of visitors were missing in the first four months. Foreign visitors almost doubled year-on-year, domestic visitors recorded a 1.4-fold increase.
