Passenger transport increased by 30.5% in May, only freight road transport carried more goods

The volume of goods carried by freight transport was slowed down mainly by a decrease in transport via pipeline. In passenger transport, both passenger numbers and transport distances grew, but more slowly than in previous months. In rail transport, passengers recorded by 60% more passenger-kilometres than a year ago.

In May 2022, the total volume of freight transport reached approximately the same volume as a year ago, i.e. 21.8 million tons (a decrease of 0.3%), year-on-year. The volume of transport increased month-on-month. From a long-term view, the current May performances were at the level of approximately 93% of the values reached in the same period before the pandemic (in May 2019). An increase in transport during May was dampened mainly by dynamic year-on-year changes - decreases in transport via pipeline. Other modes of transport including via pipeline recorded a 13% year-on-year decrease in the volume.

A significant component - road transport, which accounted for more than two-thirds of the transported tons of goods, grew year-on-year. Enterprises1) transported 14.8 million tons by road, which was 5.1% more than a year ago. Starting with the data from April 2022, the SOSR adjusted the monthly outputs (tables) on road freight transport2) so that freight transport is reported together for all enterprises, regardless of the main business activity.

Conversely, the volume of goods carried by rail decreased by 2.5% year-on-year, approximately one-sixth of the goods was carried by rail.

Freight transport performance taking into account also the transport distance, reached 3.6 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm), reached almost the level of the same period of 2019 and improved by 3.1% year-on-year.

In summary, for the first five months, a total of 1.7% more volume of goods was carried by freight transport than in the same period last year, after taking into account transport distances, performance was currently by 5.8% higher year-on-year.

Passenger transport was mainly affected by road transport

At the same time, a high year-on-year increase in the number of passengers continued in passenger transport in May 2022 for the fifth month in a row. Their number increased by more than 30.5% and reached 55.2 million persons, which was the highest number this year. The number of bus passengers increased by more than a quarter and rail passengers by more than half. Up to 89% of the carrying passengers recorded bus transport.

Passenger transport performance, which also takes into account the length of the roads, reached 750 million passenger-kilometres in May 2022 and were by 60% higher than last year. The high year-on-year growth was mainly influenced by an increase in transport distances in rail transport, where the number of kilometres driven almost doubled.

In summary, in the first five months of 2022, the number of passengers was recorded by almost 64% more than in the same period last year, after taking into account transport distances, the total number of trips reached by 60% higher number of passenger-kilometres.

Development of turnover, employment and wages in May 2022

Turnover3) of transportation and storage were by 33.8% higher year-on-year in May. The result was supported by a growth of the most important land transport and transport via pipeline, as well as the second largest division - warehousing and auxiliary activities. Turnover of air transport almost quadrupled year-on-year, but this type of transport represents only a small part of the section. Turnover of water transport increased by twofold, and postal and courier activities by a quarter.

Employment in transportation and storage was by 3.1% higher year-on-year in the fifth month of 2022. Except for postal and courier activities (a decrease by 0.5%), employment grew in all divisions of the section, more significantly in water transport (by 25.1%) and air transport (by 50.3%).

The average nominal monthly wage of this section reached EUR 1,187 in April, which was by 8.6% more than a year ago. The real wage of the section (adjusted for inflation) fell by 3.6%.

  • 2) Starting with the data from April 2022, road transport is reported both in structures for public transport (enterprises whose main business activity is transportation and storage SK NACE 49 – 53) and for non-public transport (enterprises whose main business activity is other than transport , i.e. other than SK NACE 49 – 53, but they carry out freight transport as a secondary activity).
