February´s turnover in construction recorded a fall by more than a quarter (by 26 %), a similar level was last recorded in October 2016.
The turnover decrease in selected market services 1) slightly slowed down but remained in double digits (by 13,7 %). The largest falls persist in the activities of travel agencies and offices, February´s turnover dropped by 71,1 % year-on-year and gaming and betting office' turnover also decreased significantly by 38,7 %.
Turnover in transportation and storage also continued to decrease by 2,7 %.
Turnover in information and communication activities significantly approached the level of 2020, lagging behind the level of last year only by 0,3 %.
Development in February 2021 compared to January 2021 2)
In February 2021 compared with January 2021, turnover in most sectors did not improve, it rose only in information and communication, but only slightly by 0,5 %. The largest month-on-month decrease was recorded only in construction by 5,8 %, it also decreased in selected market services by 1 % and in industry and in transportation and storage equally by 0,4 %.
Development in February 2021 compared to February 2020
Turnover in industry, after the January´s decrease rose again by 1,2 %, year-on-year. The total growth was supported by a rise in seven out of the 16 monitored components of industry 3). The outcome of the industry was affected mostly by a turnover growth in manufacture of computer products by 21,5 % whose growth was above the level of 20 % for the second month in a row. Development in the two most influential components of industry had also a significant impact, i.e. in manufacture transport equipment by 2,1 % and manufacture of metals by 5,2 %. There was a notable growth also in manufacture of machinery n.e.c. by 6 % and in manufacture of wood products by 6,5 %. The decrease from the most significant components was recorded in electricity and gas supply by 3,3 % (they are decreasing since September 2018), as well as turnover in manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products by 12,8 %, in manufacture of textiles and apparel, leather by 14,9 %, in manufacture of food by 3,7 % and in other manufacture by 5,2 %.
The year-long turnover decline in construction intensified in the second month of the new year, with turnover falling by more than a quarter (by 26 %) compared to February 2020. Such a significant decrease was in October 2016 (by 26,6 %).
Turnover in transportation and storage 4) except the growth in December 2020, did not reach the level of the previous year since November 2019. Turnover was lower year-on-year also in air and water transport. The decrease in total turnover was mitigated by a growth in warehouse and support activities for transport by 6,1 % and in postal and courier services by 7,7 %.
Pace of the turnover decline in information and communication 5) (ICT) is slowing down, the February decrease by 0,3 % was the slowest since the start of the downturn in May 2020. Growth in the most significant components of ICT contributed to the significant close-up last year, in computer programming by 6,3 % and in telecommunications by 2,2 %, where turnover increased after four months of decline. The most significant drop was in information services by 16,2 %.
Turnover decline in selected market services 6), slightly slowed down, though it continued to reach double digits. In the second month of the new year, turnover decreased by 13,7 % year-on-year, February 2020 was the last month before the Covid-19 pandemic, the turnover achieved at that time was long-term above the level of the previous year (since 2015). In February 2021, it recorded a decrease in all components of the sector, with the exception of growth in architectural and engineering activities. The biggest falls remain in the activities of travel agencies and offices, with February´s turnover down by 71,1 % year-on-year.
