Freight transport performance continued to decline, it was most affected by a drop in other transport
Freight transport recorded a decrease in the volumes of transported goods in all components, the most significant drop was recorded in other transport, which includes water, air, pipeline and warehouse and support activities. In passenger transport, the number of passengers and transport distances increased at a double-digit rate year-on-year, but in April they grew slowest in 2023.
In April 2023, the total value of the freight transport volume reached 18.5 million tons of goods, which represented a year-on-year decrease of 10.9%. The decrease in transport volumes has been continued for ten months in a row. Other transport had the most significant impact on the overall decrease, recording a decrease of 40%. This less important component continues to considerably influence the overall parameters of the transportation and storage. The sector's strongest component - road transport, which transported by 4% less year-on-year - also fell. After two months of growth, rail transport decreased by 10% year-on-year.
Freight transport performance taking into account transport distances reached 3.1 billion tonne kilometres (tkm), they were by 5% lower, year-on-year, in April 2023. Both railway transport and other transport including water, air, warehouse and support activities recorded year-on-year double-digit decreases in performance. Despite the decrease in a volume of transported goods, road transport, as the only component of the sector, slightly increased its performance by 0.3% due to higher performance in non-public road transport. This is a proportionally smaller part of road transport, which is carried out by non-transport companies, i.e. companies with the main business activity other than transport.
In total, for the first four months of 2023 , both the volume of transported goods and performance decreased in freight transport, both indicators were down by a tenth year-on-year.

In passenger transport, road transport was more successful
The number of transported persons in passenger transport increased year-on-year by almost 11% and reached 55.6 million in April 2023. The year-on-year increases in the number of passengers have continued since September 2021. All components of passenger transport rose. The number of passengers increased by 16% in public transport. The transport of rail passengers was also higher by 4.7%, but it only accounts for one-tenth of the total number of passengers in passenger transport.
Passenger transport performance taking into account the length of the journeys, reached 724 million passenger kilometres in the fourth month of 2023. When compared to the same period last year, they were higher by 14%. Transport distances increased mostly in road transport by almost 19% year-on-year.
In total, for the first four months , the number of passengers in passenger transport was by a fifth higher than a year ago, and after taking into account the transport distances, the number of passenger kilometres was almost by 30% higher.
