In April, the construction industry dropped by more than 8%, both domestic production and production realized abroad resulted in negative values

The Slovak construction industry achieved a passive balance for the second consecutive month. All components of domestic construction production decreased year-on-year, especially repair and maintenance work. Construction production realized abroad has already recorded a decline.

In April 2023, construction production¹⁾ reached EUR 477.4 million and it decreased by 8.3%²⁾. After seasonal adjustment, construction output³⁾ remained at the same level compared to the previous month.

Domestic construction companies realized up to 89.7% of the total production of the industry. Compared to April 2022, the volume of their production was lower by 9%. All components of domestic construction production contributed to the negative result. New construction⁴⁾ decreased year-on-year by 7.3% and construction works on repairs and maintenance of buildings by up to 14.1%. A slight decrease of 3.1% was reported by other works, representing the smallest share in production.

Works on engineering constructions, which also include the construction of highways, slowed down year-on-year by at least 1.5%, but the construction of buildings decreased by as much as 13.5%.

Works abroad, which were in year-on-year growth in February and March, dropped by 2.2% in April. Their share in the total production was only 10.3%.

Development for the first four months of 2023

From January to April 2023, construction production reached a volume of almost EUR 1.8 billion and it decreased by 1.2% year-on-year. The volume of domestic construction work decreased in general by 0.9%, while domestic new construction⁴⁾ was higher by 3.8% year-on-year, but repairs and maintenance decreased by up to 9.3% and other works by 1.7%. Construction works abroad were lower by 4% compared to the first four months of last year.
