Turnover in selected sectors of economy in July 2020

In July, a decline in turnover slowed down in all sectors, the last year's level is reached slowest in construction.

During July 2020, turnover increased month-on-month in all sectors, but it did not yet reach the last year's level. The most significant improvement was in industry, where turnover was only by 1,5 % lower year-on-year. In July, turnover in construction lagged behind the last year's level by 13,5 %, in transportation and storage by 7,8 % and in selected market services by 6,6 %.

In July, as for the more similar activities of individual sectors, the highest decline in turnover was still recorded in travel agencies and tour operators activities, which reached only one-sixth of the volume of turnover from the corresponding period last year (a decrease of 84,6 %). Renewed production in automotive industry also brought an increase in turnover in manufacture of transport equipment, which after five months exceeded the year-on-year level by 13,1 %.

Development in July 2020 compared to June 2020 1)

In July, turnover development was favourable in all sectors at the month-on-month level. Together with a revived production and provision of services, turnover in transportation and storage increased by 4,7 %, industry by 3,9 %, construction by 1,6 %, selected market services by 1,1 % and in information and communication by 0,3 %.

Development in July 2020 compared to July 2019

Turnover in industry significantly approached the turnover from July 2019, in July 2020, after significant declines in previous months (mainly in May by 33,9 % and in April by up to 44,8 %), it was only by 1,5 % lower year-on-year.

The development by the SK NACE Rev2 sections was influenced by the decrease in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation by 8,1 %; mining and quarrying by 6,4 %; electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 3,2 % and in manufacturing by 1,1 %.

Turnover in July was also lower in the majority of industrial sectors, their total decrease was the most influenced by the drop in manufacture of basic metal and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment by 14,2 %, manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 11,8 %, other manufacture, repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 16,5 %, manufacture of rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products by 7,8 % and in manufacture of wood and paper products, printing by 11,1 %.

After a five-month decrease, manufacture of transport equipment returned to positive numbers, with a year-on-year increase in turnover of 13,1 %. Turnover also increased in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 15 %, in manufacture of electrical equipment by 3,8 %, in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 6,7 % and in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and preparations by 3 %.

For the fifth month in a row, a decline in turnover in construction continued, compared to July 2019, it fell by 13,5 %.

A decrease in turnover in transportation and storage 2) slowed to 7,8 % in July, compared to a decrease of 11,7 % in June. The total decrease was mostly influenced by lower turnover in warehousing and support activities for transportation by 12,4 %. Lower turnover was also recorded in air transport and land transport and transport via pipelines year-on-year.

In information and communication 3), a decline continued for the third month in a row, turnover decreased by 4 % compared to July 2019. It decreased the most in motion picture by 40,9 %, information service activities by 10,8 % and after one and a half years of growth, turnover in computer programming also decreased by 3,1 %. Turnover increased only in publishing activities year-on-year.

In selected market services 4), turnover was lower by 6,6 % year-on-year. The highest decrease continued in travel agencies and tour operators activities, compared to July 2019, it decreased by 84,6 % (in June it fell by 84,9 %, in May by 80,5 %). Turnover also decreased significantly in legal and accounting activities by 9,8 %. Turnover developed favourably, especially in real estate activities and in gambling and betting activities, with year-on-year growth exceeding 10 % for both.

Development in the seven months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019

In the first seven months of 2020, turnover in industry decreased by 16,2 % year-on-year. Development by SK sections of NACE Rev. 2 was affected by a decrease in manufacturing by 17,4 %, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 9,1 %, mining and quarrying by 4,7 % and water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities by 3,9 %.

Since the beginning of the year, turnover decreased in manufacture of transport equipment by 24,6 %, manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products by 16,4 %, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 9,1 %, in manufacture of rubber and plastic products by 12,7 % and in manufacture of machinery and equipment by 14,9 %. Turnover increased only in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 4,7 % and in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and preparations by 7,5 % year-on-year.

Turnover in construction decreased by 8,9 % in the seven months compared to the same period in 2019.

Turnover in transportation and storage decreased by 12,1 % year-on-year, mainly due to lower turnover in warehousing and support activities for transportation by 18 % and in land transport and transport via pipelines by 9 %. Turnover increased only in postal and courier service activities by 6,8 %.

The total turnover in information and communication increased by 1,1 % due to a rise in computer programming by 8,7 %, which were the only one to record a rise in the development of accumulated turnover since the beginning of the year.

In selected market services, turnover decreased by 6,3 %. The total decrease was mostly affected by lower turnover in travel agencies and tour operators activities by 52,5 %, administrative and support service activities by 2,7 % and in advertising and market research by 4,8 %. A year-on-year increase was maintained only in turnover in real estate activities by 9,6 %.
