Employment in Slovakia continued to decline in July in most sectors. The development of the average wage was more optimistic.
Employment
In July 2020, the unfavourable employment development continued similarly as in the previous three months, employment increased year-on-year only in information and communication activities. However, the pace of its growth slowed down also here; compared to June's growth of 5,2 %, it increased by only 0,7 % in July. The largest decrease persisted in accommodation by 20,8 %, it also decreased in food and beverage service activities by 9,7 %, construction by 8,3 %, industry by 6,8 %, wholesale by 5 %, sale and repair of motor vehicles by 4,5 %, retail trade by 3,8 %, selected market services by 2,7 % and in transportation and storage by 2,4 %
In the first seven months of 2020, compared with the corresponding period in 2019, employment rose, on average, in information and communication by 4,5 %. It dropped in accommodation by 8,8 %, food and beverage service activities by 6,3 %, industry by 5,1 %, construction by 4,3 %, retail trade by 3,8 %, wholesale by 3 %, sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2,4 %, selected market services by 1,5 % and in transportation and storage by 0,3 %.
Average monthly wage
In July, the average nominal monthly wage increased again in the majority of sectors, it dropped year-on-year only in accommodation. In July 2020 compared with July 2019, it increased the most in trade, in wholesale by 6,1 % (reached EUR 1 095) and in retail sale by 5,9 % (reached EUR 822). It rose in food and beverage service activities by 4,7 % (EUR 558), sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2,7 % (EUR 1 062), information and communication activities by 2,6 % (EUR 1 966), construction by 2,2 % (EUR 782), selected market services by 0,9 % (EUR 1 031), transportation and storage by 0,5 % (EUR 1 040). There was a drop in the average nominal monthly wage only in accommodation, however, despite the June´s decrease by 19,1 % it also mitigated to 5,7 % (wage reached EUR 751). The wage in industry remained unchanged at the level of last year (EUR 1 157).
Similarly, the average real monthly wage in July 2020 increased year-on-year in the majority of sectors, it dropped only in four sectors. In July 2020 compared with July 2019, it rose in wholesale by 4,3 %, in retail trade by 4,1 %, in food and beverage service activities by 2,9 %, in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 1 %, in information and communication activities by 0,9 % and in construction by 0,5 %. It decreased the most in accommodation by 7,3 %, although the development was more favourable than in June when it dropped by 20,5 %. It increased also in industry by 1,7 %, in transportation and storage by 1,2 % and in selected market services by 0,8 %.
In the first seven months of 2020, compared with the corresponding period in 2019, the wage increased, on average, in retail trade by 4,9 % (reached EUR 793), wholesale by 4,1 % (EUR 1 066), food and beverage service activities by 2,9 % (EUR 526), selected market services by 1,6 % (EUR 1 022), information and communication activities by 1,5 % (EUR 2 002) and in construction by 0,7 % (EUR 734). It dropped in accommodation by 10,3 % (EUR 687), sale and repair of motor vehicles by 1,1 % (EUR 1 026), transportation and storage by 0,5 % (EUR 1 005) and in industry by 0,4 % (EUR 1 145).
The real monthly wage rose year-on-year, in retail trade by 2,5 %, in wholesale by 1,8 % and in food and beverage service activities by 0,6 %. It dropped in accommodation by 12,3 %, in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 3,3 %, in transportation and storage by 2,7 %, in industry by 2,6 %, in construction by 1,6 %, in information and communication activities by 0,8 % and in selected market services by 0,7 %.
