Turnover in selected sectors of the economy did not reach the level of the previous year even in August, the biggest drop continued in construction
In August 2020, turnover in selected sectors were still lower than a year ago, it even recorded a more significant decline in industry, construction and information technologies compared to July. It decreased the most in construction, where recorded lower turnover by 18,4 % year-on-year. A year-on-year decline of turnover weakened in selected market services as well as in transportation and storage compared to July.
In August, as for the individual specific activities, the largest decline in turnover was recorded in travel agencies and tour operator activities, their turnover was lower by 80 % year-on-year. After a long period of growth, turnover also fell in computer programming for the second month in a row. The development was particularly favourable in land transport and transport via pipeline, where turnover grew again after five months of decline. Gaming and betting offices improved the most, with turnover increasing by 17,6 % year-on-year.
Development in August 2020 compared to July 2020 1)
In August, compared to July, turnover developed most favourably in industry, where it increased by 0,7 %. It also achieved a month-on-month growth in transportation and storage and in selected market services, both equally 0,4 %. The development in construction and in information and communication activities was less favourable. Turnover decreased in both sectors, by 6,2 % in construction and by 1,1 % in information and communication.
Development in August 2020 compared to August 2019
Turnover decreased in industry by 3,2 % year-on-year. The development by SK sections of NACE Rev. 2 affected a decrease in water and waste supply by 6,4 %; electricity and gas supply by 5,1 %; manufacturing by 2,9 % and a rise in mining and quarrying by 3,1 %.
As for the special groupings of industries that contributed the most to the total decline in turnover, the most significant decrease was recorded in manufacture of metal by 9,3 %, other manufacture by 18,6 %, electricity and gas supply by 5,1 %, manufacture of wood products by 10,2 % and in manufacture of machinery n.e.c. by 8,9 %.
Turnover increased in manufacture of computer products by 12,7 %, manufacture of rubber and plastic products by 2,6 %, manufacture of chemicals by 3,4 %, manufacture of coke and petroleum products by 2,7 % and in mining and quarrying by 3,1 % %. Turnover did not change in manufacture of transport equipment year-on-year.
Turnover fell in construction for the sixth month in a row, compared to August 2019, it was lower by 18,4 %, which was the largest decrease since October 2016.
Turnover continued to decline in transportation and storage 2), but a decrease was the slightest since the beginning of the corona crisis. In August, turnover decreased by 5,3 % year-on-year, a decrease was mainly due to lower turnover in warehousing and support activities for transportation by 16 %, lower turnover was also in air and water transport. The development was particularly favourable in land transport and transport via pipelines, where turnover increased again by 7,1 % after five months of drop.
Turnover also continued to decrease in information and communication 3) for the fourth month in a row 3), while turnover decreased by 4,5 % compared to August 2019. It fell most significantly in computer programming by 7,8 %, which after a long-term growth recorded a decline for the second month in a row. Turnover increased year-on-year only in publishing activities.
In selected market services 4), turnover was 5,7 % lower than in August 2019. The largest decrease in turnover continued to be recorded in travel agencies and tour operator activities, it decreased by 80 % year-on-year (in July it decreased by 84,6 %, in June by 84,9 %). A decrease in turnover in legal and accounting activities deepened by 12,8 %, compared to a fall of 9,8 % in July. On the contrary, the entities operating in gaming and betting activities were the most successful, whose turnover increased by 17,6 % year-on-year, which was the largest growth in September 2016.
Development for the eight months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019
In the eight months of 2020, turnover decreased in industry by 14,7 % year-on-year, while it decreased the most in manufacture of transport equipment by 21,8 %.
In the eight months, turnover decreased in construction by 10,3 % compared to the same period in 2019.
In transportation and storage, turnover decreased by 11,3 % year-on-year.
The total turnover increased in information and communication by 0,5 % due to a growth in computer programming by 6,7 %.
In selected market services, turnover decreased by 6,2 %, the total decrease was mostly due to lower turnover in activities of travel agencies and tour operator activities by 57,4 %.
