Turnover in industry began to decline again, the long-term stability of growth was recorded only in information and communication

In July, within the five monitored sectors of the economy, turnover rose year-on-year in information and communication activities, but it also started to grow again in construction. Turnover in industry returned to negative values after the recovery in June. Turnover in selected market services, as well as in transportation and storage, decreased at a similar year-on-year rate.

Industry, as the most important sector in the structure of the economy, recorded a year-on-year decrease of turnover by 8.7% in July 2023. After a turn to growth in June, it thus returned to the trend of declines that were recorded in the first five months of the current year. A real decline in turnover (in constant prices) was reflected in 11 of the 16 monitored industrial sectors1). The overall development was most significantly influenced by a year-on-year decrease in turnover in electricity and gas supply by 48.2%, in manufacture of rubber and plastic products by 21.4%, in manufacture of metals by 9.4% and in manufacture of transport equipment by 2%. A more significant decrease in turnover stopped almost 100% year-on-year growth in turnover in manufacture of coke and petroleum products.

Turnover of selected market services decreased by 8.3% year-on-year, while lower values than a year ago were recorded for the seventh consecutive month in July 2023. The negative result was primarily influenced by administrative and other business support activities with a 23.3% year-on-year drop in turnover, as well as significant activities of head offices with a 17.8% drop. For the second consecutive month, turnover of activities of travel agencies also fell. It was by 6.9% lower than a year ago, but slightly up compared to the "pre-pandemic" year of 2019. The highest year-on-year increase in turnover by 20.6% was recorded by services to buildings.

In July 2023, turnover decreased year-on-year in transportation and storage enterprises by 8.2%. It continued the negative values from June and at the same time achieved the worst result in more than three years. The overall decline in the sector was the result of a significant decrease in turnover in the strongest land transport and transport via pipeline by 12.9%. The second largest in terms of volume, warehousing and support activities for transportation, were also in negative numbers and declined by year-on-year 2.8%.

Information and communication activities continue to maintain a high rate of turnover growth for a long time, with a year-on-year increase by 13.2% in June 2023. Again, computer programming, the strongest in terms of volume, contributed most significantly to the overall positive result, with a year-on-year turnover growth by 23.9%.

In July 2023, construction companies achieved realized turnover by 3.7% higher than a year ago.
