Retail turnover increased by up to 17% year-on-year in January. It rose continuously for 10 months in a row
As many as eight of the nine retail components exceeded the turnover of January 2021. January turnover increased by almost 30% year-on-year in wholesale (excluding motor vehicles), by the same amount in food and beverage service activities, and by 18% in sale and repair of motor vehicles. The release of anti-pandemic measures caused accommodation turnover to quadruple compared to January 2021.
In January 2022, retail turnover increased by as much as 17% compared to the corresponding period last year, which was the highest year-on-year growth since January 2019. Compared to December 2021, the growth rate accelerated by 15.9 p.p.
Year-on-year, turnover rose in eight of the nine retail components. The most important component, turnover in non-specialized stores (hyper- and supermarkets), increased for the first time after a three-month drop, by 14.2%.
Turnover rose the fastest in bookstores, sporting goods and toys stores (by 71.3%) and in hobby markets, furniture and consumer electronics stores (by 58.4%). Stores with food, beverages and tobacco (by 24.2%), specialized stores with footwear, textiles, drugstores (by 16.6%) and service stations (by 11.8%) also had a high turnover growth rate. Service station turnover increased year-on-year for the eleventh month in a row. Compared to January 2021, retailers in stalls and markets earned by 9% more and retailers of PC and ICT equipment by 6.8% more. Year-on-year, turnover decreased only in mail order sales and sales outside stores (by 2%).
Development of other components of trade in January 2022 compared to January 2021
In January 2022, sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, the turnover was realized with a year-on-year growth by 17.9%. Turnover increased in sale of motor vehicles by 24.6% and in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles by 10.2%. It dropped in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories by 2%.
In wholesale, turnover increased by 29.3% at current prices compared to the corresponding period of 2021. It increased in all wholesale activities except wholesale of ICT equipment (it dropped by 4.3%). Turnover increased the most in wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (by 63%). The wholesale of machinery, equipment and accessories, non-specialized wholesale trade and other specialized wholesale trade also recorded a more than two-fifth turnover increase. Turnover in wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 1.6%.
In January 2022, turnover was realized in accommodation with a year-on-year growth by more than 300%.
In the activities of food and beverage services, compared to the corresponding period of 2021, turnover increased by 29.3%.
