Freight transport performance achieved again a year-on-year growth after a year

Freight transport showed a year-on-year increase in volumes of transported goods mainly due to the increased volumes in road transport by more than 10%. On the contrary, railway and other transport did not reach last year's values. The number of passengers in passenger transport rose year-on-year at a double-digit rate, and the transport distances also exceeded the last year´s values.

The total value of the volume of freight transport in July 2023 reached 19.1 million tons of goods, representing a year-on-year increase by 3.4%. The year-on-year increase in transport volumes occurred for the first time since July 2022. Road transport, the strongest component, had the most significant impact on the overall increase, which increased its volume again by 10.3% after half a year of declines. For the fourth consecutive month, rail transport recorded a decrease in the volume of transport, by 5.5%.  2.3 million tons of goods were transported by other transport, however, it did not reach the last year's values.

Freight transport performance, which also takes into account transport distances, reached a total of 3 billion ton kilometers (tkm) in July 2023, it was lower by 0.6% year-on-year. Railway transport as well as other transport including water, air, warehouse and support activities recorded a year-on-year performance decreases. With the year-on-year growth in the volume of transported goods, road transport, as the only component of the industry, also increased its performance by 2%. Non-public road transport had the most significant impact on higher performance. This part of road transport is carried out by non-transport companies, i.e. companies with a core business other than transport.

In total, for the first seven months of 2023, the volume of transported goods decreased by 9.5% and performance by 10.7% in freight transport.

In passenger transport, road transport, especially public transport, was more favourable

In July 2023, the number of the transported persons in passenger transport increased by more than 12% year-on-year and reached 48.9 million people. Year-on-year growth in the number of passengers has continued since September 2021. Mainly the public transport is used, the number of passengers increased by a quarter year-on-year. Passenger transport by rail was also higher by almost 11%, but it represents only 13% of the total number of passengers in passenger transport.

Passenger transport performance, taking into account the length of transport, reached 883 million passenger kilometers in the seventh month of 2023. When compared to the corresponding period last year, it was higher by 4.3%. Year-on-year performance rose mainly in road transport, by 13.2%. Railway transport recorded a growth by 9.2%. Only in other transport, the performance decreased year-on-year.

In total for the first seven months, by 15.3% more passengers traveled by passenger transport than a year ago, and after taking into account transport distances, the number of passenger kilometers was higher by 17.3%.

Methodology:

From the data for the month of April 2022 (published in June 2022), the Statistical Office of the SR modified the methodology of road freight transport, which affected the monthly data (tables) in the outputs of the informative report - Freight and passenger transport - according to the First Release Calendar. The volume of transported goods as well as performance in tonne-kilometres of road freight transport are reported for public transport companies (their main activity is transport and storage SK NACE 49 – 53) and for non-public transport companies (their main activity is other than transport, i.e. other than SK NACE 49 – 53, but they carry out freight transport as a secondary activity).

Indicators of passenger and freight transport are created from data from statistical survey Dop 1-12, which are filled in by public transport organizations with 20 or more employees exhaustively and small businesses (up to 20 employees) on a selective basis with additions to the entire population of businesses. For other enterprises (they carry out transport as a secondary activity), monthly data are estimated and quarterly refined and revised based on a summary from a weekly sample statistical survey in road freight transport.
