Year-on-year, turnover increased mostly in transport, it decreased only in construction, in which, together with the turnover of selected market services it lagged behind the pre-pandemic turnover

Turnover in July increased year-on-year in four of the five monitored sectors of the economy, there was a decrease only in construction. The pre-pandemic values were exceeded mainly by information and communication (ICT) activities by more than 5 %, they also increased in industry and transportation.

As in the previous months, the turnover development in July 2021, was affected by the comparison base, despite the fact that anti-pandemic measures were relaxed in some sectors, their effects still persisted.

In July 2021, turnover in industry increased by 2,8 % year-on-year, slightly exceeding the level of pre-pandemic turnover, and the entire industry by almost 3 %. Of the 16 industries surveyed, seven were above the level two years ago.

There was a year-on-year turnover increase also in other activities. In information and communication it reached 9,8 %, in transportation the turnover increased by 10,4 % year-on-year and in selected market services by 3,2 %. In the first two cases, the achieved turnover also exceeded the pre-pandemic level (July 2019), while in selected market services it lagged behind by less than 4 %.

There was a year-on-year turnover decrease only in construction, by 3 %. For the period of two years ago, it lagged behind in double digits.

In July compared with June 2021, turnover rose in selected market services by 1,5 % and in industry by 0,4 %. It dropped in construction by 7,8 %, in information and communication by 1,6 % and in transportation and storage by 0,1 %.

More detailed information on the turnover development in July 2021 compared with July 2020

In industry, turnover increased by 2,8 % compared to July last year, while the year-on-year growth was recorded in nine out of a total of 16 monitored industries 2). There was a similar  balance than in the pre-pandemic period, a growth was recorded in 7 sectors.

The year-on-year growth of total turnover in July was mostly influenced by manufacture of metals, with a year-on-year growth by almost 9 % (by 8,8 %) and manufacture of machinery and equipment with a growth by 14,6 %. Of other industries, the total turnover growth was mainly due to the supply of electricity and gas (increase by 5,1 %), manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (growth by 25,2 %) and manufacture of rubber and plastic products (growth by 4,2 %). The majority of these industries also exceeded the turnover of two years ago.

In construction, turnover dropped after the four months of year-on-year growth, the decrease was at the level of 3 %. It was different by more than 16 % from turnover achieved in the corresponding period before the pandemic (July 2019).

Turnover in transportation and storage 3) increased by 10,4 % year-on-year in July. In the corresponding period last year, it dropped by almost 8 %. The current year-on-year increase was supported by a growth in warehousing and support activities by 18,3 % and in land transport and transport via pipelines by 7,6 %. Turnover in air transport also rose more than threefold, but it represents a less significant share of the total turnover. Compared to the pre-pandemic turnover (July 2019), the total turnover of the sector increased slightly (by almost 2 %), out of five of its activities, three reached the turnover level of  two years ago.

In information and communication activities 4), turnover in July increased by 9,8 % year-on-year, the achieved volume also exceeded the turnover level of two years ago (by more than 5 %). Year-on-year, turnover increased most significantly in computer programming (by 17,8 %), while of the six monitored components of the industry, turnover increased year-on-year in all of them except the publishing services. Turnover in telecommunications reached the level of two years ago, three activities exceeded the value from July 2019, the growths were above 10 %.

In July, turnover in selected market services 5) increased by 3,2 % year-on-year. It also approached the pre-pandemic level significantly, lagging behind by less than 4 %. The current year-on-year growth of total turnover was influenced mainly by an increase of up to three times year-on-year, in office administrative, office support and other business support services by 18,1% and in the activities of travel agencies and offices. However, despite the significant year-on-year growth, compared to the turnover of two years ago (July 2019), it did not reach even half of their volume. Similarly, most activities continued to lag behind the pre-pandemic levels. On the contrary, compared to July 2019, administrative, office and real estate activities were more successful, in both cases the growths were above 10 %.

Development for the first seven months of 2021 compared to the corresponding period in 2020

In total, for the first seven months of 2021, turnover in industry increased by 16,5 % year-on-year, mainly due to a rise in turnover in manufacture of transport equipment by 27,3 %, manufacture of metals by 19,8 % and in manufacture of machinery n.e.c. by 22,6 %. It increased also in transportation and storage by 13,7 % and in information and communication activities by 5,9 %. There was a turnover drop in construction and in selected market services, it decreased by 1,6 %, year-on-year.
