Employment and average monthly wage in selected sectors of economy in August 2020

Employment, with the exception of information and communication activities, decreased year-on-year in August in all sectors, the development of the average wage was more favorable, there was a decrease only three sectors

Employment

In August, the employment dropped in all sectors, except information and communication activities. The highest drops were recorded for the fifth consecutive month, in accommodation and in food and beverage service activities. In August, employment rose only in information and communication activities by 2,2 %. The greatest decline persisted in accommodation by 18,7 %, in restaurants and beverage service activities by 10,9 %. It dropped also in construction by 9 %, industry by 6,7 %, in wholesale by 5,1 %, in retail sale by 4,6 %, in selected market services by 2,2 %, in transportation and storage by 1,9 % and in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 1 %.

In the first eight months of 2020, compared with the corresponding period in 2019, employment rose, on average, only in information and communication activities by 4,2 %. It dropped in accommodation by 10,1 %, in restaurants and beverage service activities by 6,9 %, in industry by 5,3 %, in construction by 4,9 %, in retail sale by 3,9 %, in wholesale by 3,2 %, in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2,2 %, in selected market services by 1,6 % and in transportation and storage by 0,5 %.

Average monthly wage

Although in August, the average nominal monthly wage increased in the majority of sectors, but while in July it decreased year-on-year only in accommodation, in August, it was followed also by industry and transportation. In August 2020 compared with August 2019, the largest wage growth was recorded in retail sale by 5,3 % (it reached EUR 814) and in restaurants and beverage service activities by 5,1 % (EUR 553). It rose also in wholesale by 3,8 % (EUR 1 057), construction by 2,4 % (EUR 761), information and communication services by 2,4 % (EUR 1 941), in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2 % (EUR 1 048), in selected market services by 1,2 % (EUR 1 029). From the selected sectors, there was the greatest decrease of the average nominal monthly wage, for the sixth month in a row, in accommodation, it dropped in August, by 5,4 %, year-on-year (reaching EUR 753). There were lower wages also in transportation and storage by 1,3 % (EUR 1 007) and in industry by 0,3 % (EUR 1 121).

Similarly, the average real monthly wage in August 2020 increased year-on-year in the majority of sectors, it dropped only in four sectors. In August 2020 compared with August 2019, it rose in retail sale by 3,8 %, in restaurant and beverage service activities by 3,6 %, in wholesale by 2,4 %, in construction and information and communication equally by 1 % and in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 0,6 %. It decreased the most in accommodation by 6,7 %, it fell also in transportation and storage by 2,7 %, in industry by 1,7 % and in selected market services by 0,2 %.

In the first eight months of 2020, compared with the corresponding period in 2019, the wage increased, on average, in retail sale by 4,9 % (reached EUR 795), wholesale by 4,1 % (EUR 1 065), food and beverage service activities by 3,1 % (EUR 529), information and communication activities by 1,6 % (EUR 1 994), in selected market services by 1,6 % (EUR 1 023) and in construction by 0,8 % (EUR 738). It fell in accommodation by 9,7 % (EUR 695), in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 0,8 % (EUR 1 028), transportation and storage by 0,6 % (EUR 1 005) and in industry by 0,4 % (EUR 1 142).

The real monthly wage rose year-on-year, only in retail sale by 2,6 %, in wholesale by 1,9 % and in food and beverage service activities by 0,9 %. It dropped in accommodation by 11,6 %, in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2,9 %, in transportation and storage by 2,7 %, in industry by 2,5 %, in construction by 1,4 %, in information and communication activities and in selected market services equally by 0,6 %.
