World Statistics Day - 20 October 2025

Last update: 04.09.2026

The demand for quality data is growing: The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic joins the celebration of World Statistics Day

World Statistics Day highlights the importance of reliable data for the functioning of society — from everyday decision-making to the national strategic planning. In the field of official statistics, increasing emphasis is being placed on innovation that leads to more efficient procedures and methodologies. This also includes efforts to enhance statistical literacy and to make statistics understandable and accessible to everyone.

In a time of global challenges such as climate change and increasing social inequalities—high-quality data are an essential prerequisite for sustainable decision-making and responsible policy-making. The Statistical Office of the SR joins the global statistical community in celebrating World Statistics Day, which takes place every five years on October 20 under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). This year’s theme, “Shaping the world through quality data and statistics for all,” highlights that reliable and accessible data form the foundation of social progress and are crucial to a better understanding of our world. World Statistics Day is a unique opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of official statistics for the social development.

High-quality statistics enable policymakers, businesses, and citizens to make informed decisions, address key issues, and support positive change. “Equally important is building statistical literacy to ensure that statistics are accessible and understandable to everyone. Accurate, up-to-date, and openly available data strengthen trust in statistics and promote transparency, reinforcing the relationship between data producers and users,” emphasized Ľudmila Ivančíková, Vice President of the Statistical Office of the SR.

The statistical community unites experts from around the world, establishes standards, exchanges methodologies, and uses advanced tools, including artificial intelligence. It combats misinformation and promotes evidence-based decision-making. As a result, reliable statistics remain one of the pillars of a transparent and efficient society, even in an era of rapid technological progress.

The Statistical Office of the SR ensures that all statistics are impartial, accurate, and reliable, in accordance with the Code of Practice for European Statistics. It provides information to the public, researchers, media, and other users in compliance with the Act on State Statistics. Through its social media channels, it also shares these messages with a wider audience in the form of visually appealing infographics.
