Construction work started fully in April, new construction in inland and work abroad speeded up

In April, construction production recorded a revival for the first time this year, growing year-on-year by 9%. This was affected by a re-start of new construction in inland, and also an increase in repair and mainte-nance. In terms of orientation of production, construction of buildings and civil engineering grew. Work abroad also rose at a fast pace, up to a quarter.

The volume of construction work1) reached almost EUR 583 million and increased year-on-year by 9%2,3). Construction thus began to grow again after four months of year-on-year slumps, for the first time this year. After taking seasonal effects into account, construction production increased month-on-month by 7.8%.

Production in inland was affected by a significant revival of construction work in a decisive component of the sector – in new construction4), but also repairs and maintenance. The year-on-year growth of both of these components exceeded 8%. The smallest component - other work, which in comparison with last year, lagged behind by almost a fifth - had a slight dampening effect on the overall result of the sector. Construction production in inland accounted for more than 88% of the total performance of the construction.

In terms of orientation of production, construction of buildings speeded up year-on-year by 8.1%, which was the highest in the last 14 months. Civil engineering, which includes construction of high-ways, also increased by 5.6%.

Production of construction enterprises abroad also progressed dynamically, compared to last year's April, it was higher by almost a quarter. Its share in total production was almost 12%.

In total, for the four months of 2024, construction production amounted to EUR 1.9 billion and decreased year-on-year by 2.7%. The dominant new construction in inland decreased by 4% and other work also fell by 7.1%. On the contrary, repairs and maintenance increased slightly by 1.2%.

In terms of orientation of production, as for construction production, construction of buildings recorded a decrease of 2.6% and civil engineering declined by 5.3%.

In the total, for the first four months, the volume of construction work abroad was by 2% lower year-on-year.

  • 1) construction output includes the volume of work realized by own employees, including estimation of output for self-employed persons and construction establishments of non-construction enterprises, absolute data are at current prices
  • 2) the indices are at constant prices (average of 2021) and are preliminary, for January and February they were updated in accordance with the planned revisions for short-term statistics, according to which they are back adjusted according to the final price indices

  • 4) new construction - construction including renewals and enhancements

The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic implemented a methodological change - a transition to a new base period (from 2015 to 2021) from the publication of data for January 2024. This change also affected indicators of construction production. In order to monitor the data over a long period of time, the data were recalculated to a new base in the entire time series – more in the document Change of the base period and the classification according to kind-of-activity units (PDF - 183 kB).

Monthly data on construction production are released monthly within 40 days after the end of the reference period, absolute data as well as indices re preliminary and they are adjusted quarterly, in the month after the end of the quarter. More in the Methodology.
