Increase in retail turnover was mainly affected by e-shops, slowed down by lower turnover of gas stations
Retail turnover recorded a growth even in May 2024, it was higher by 5.2% year-on-year. In addition, the overall good result was supported by almost a quarter increase in turnover of Internet sales. Compared to last year, hyper- and supermarkets also did better, their turnover rose at the fastest rate this year. On the contrary, turnover of gas stations fell by double digits, and turnover of ICT equipment lagged behind by almost a tenth.
Retail turnover1,2) grew for the fifth consecutive month, currently increased year-on-year by 5.2% at constant prices in May 2024. However, year-on-year, higher turnover were still influenced by the lower comparative base of last year, when retail turnover were slowed down after recalculation to constant prices.
Up to 7 out of 9 components of the retail trade reached year-on-year higher turnover at constant prices. The result of the entire sector was most significantly supported by a rise of turnover of e-shops (retail trade out of stores, stalls and markets) by 24.1%, increase of turnover by 9% in specialized stores, e.g. footwear, textiles, drugstores or pharmacies (specialized retail sale of other goods) and its increase by 4.7% in large non-specialized hyper- and supermarkets. The double-digit growth in turnover of specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores also contributed to the overall growth of the sector.
Year-on-year, turnover of gas stations (specialized retail sale of propellants) as well as turnover of specialized stores for sale of information and communication equipment decreased.

Year-on-year development of other components of trade in May 2024
As for the other components of internal trade, turnover1,2) increased year-on-year only in accommodation, by 6.2%. Sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 1.2%, wholesale3) by 3.5% and food and beverage service activities by 3.9% recorded a decrease in turnover.

Month-on-month development in May 2024 compared to April 2024
Turnover after seasonal adjustment rose month-on-month4) in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 1%, in food and beverage service activities by 5% and mostly in accommodation by up to 12.3%. It declined in wholesale3) by 3.3% and in retail trade by 0.9%.
Development for 2024
In total, for the five months of 2024, turnover1,2) increased year-on-year in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 0.9%, in retail trade by 4.4%, in food and beverage service activities by 3.8% and also in accommodation by 1%. Year-on-year, lower turnover were recorded only in wholesale3), by 2.1%.
