European Statistical System

Last update: 08.09.2021 | Number of views: 60420

The European Statistical System (ESS) is composed of Eurostat (the Statistical Office of the European Union), national statistical offices of all Member States (different National Statistical Institutions) and other national authorities responsible in each Member State for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics. This partnership includes also the European Economic Area (EEA) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries.

The ESS guarantees that European statistics compiled in all Member States are reliable, following common criteria and definitions and data are processed in an appropriate way, so that they are always comparable among different countries of the EU. Eurostat´s role is to define the methods of harmonization of statistics in close cooperation with the national statistical authorities.

Eurostat coordinates its cooperation with the National Statistical Institutions within the European Statistical System and at European level with other Commission services, agencies, the European Central Bank, international organisations, such as the OECD, the UN, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Currently, the ESS is regulated by the European Statistical Law, adopted in 2009 as the Regulation (EC) 223/2009 of the European Parliament and the Council on European statistics. The Statistical Law was amended by the Regulation (EU) 2015/759 of the European Parliament and the Council.

The list above is published for information only in accordance with Article 5(2) of Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 2009 on European statistics (OJ L 87, 31.3.2009, p. 164). It is updated regularly. Where necessary, the names of the National statistical institutes and other national authorities have been translated into English by Eurostat.

European statistics are developed, produced and disseminated by both the European Statistical System (ESS) and the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).
