Statistics in the field of health covers two parts - health statistics and statistics on incapacity to work due to disease and accident.
Data in health statistics are collected mainly within the annual state statistical surveys performed under the Ministry of Health of the SR by the National Health Information Centre. It is concerned about the data from the domains of: outpatient and inpatient health care, common curative and diagnostic units, network of health care facilities in the SR and health status. The National Health Information Centre also has available other data on the health status of inhabitants from the statistical surveys realised on the basis of legislation of the Ministry of Health of the SR (www.nczisk.sk).
Another data sources on health are the administrative data sources of the Public Health Authority of the SR (www.uvzsr.sk), the State Institute for Control of Drugs (www.sukl.sk), health insurance companies and the Social Insurance Agency (www.socpoist.sk). Basic data on health is available in the Statistical Yearbook of the SR, the Social Trends of the SR and in other publications of the Statistical Office of the SR.
The domain of health statistics also encompasses the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), a sample-based survey conducted in accordance with a harmonised European methodology. The primary objective of this survey is to collect internationally comparable data on the health status of the population, the use of healthcare services, and various health determinants, whether positive or negative, that influence public health. The survey is implemented at irregular intervals of every five to six years across all EU Member States, pursuant to Regulation (EU) No 2019/1700 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which establishes a common framework for European statistics on persons and households based on individual data collected from samples.
The data obtained through EHIS are of considerable importance not only for the purposes of international comparison, but also for policymakers and for meeting the requirements of specific European strategies. These data provide an essential evidence base for addressing current public health challenges within the EU, such as population ageing, health inequalities, and the quality and performance of healthcare systems.
Statistics on incapacity to work contains a broad range of information on incapacity for work due to illness and injury by the NACE classification, territory and other criteria.
It covers the data on average number persons covered by sickness insurance, newly notified cases of incapacity for work (IW) and calendar IW days due to disease, accidents at work and other injuries, data on accidents at work (including fatal) and occupational diseases, on compensations for accidents at work and occupational diseases and data on employees at hazardous workplaces.
The data on incapacity for work was collected by the annual exhaustive state statistical survey till the year 2006. Since the year 2007 the data has been processed and received from the administrative data sources of the Social Insurance Agency, the National Labour Inspectorate (www.nip.sk) and the Public Health Authority of the SR.
